How Do Brakes Work?

Obviously, when you press your brake pedal, it slows your car down and allows you to come to a stop. What happens mechanically when you press the pedal, though, that allows this process to work? Well, there are actually a number of parts in play.

When you press your brake pedal, it will send pressure throughout your brake lines. The brake lines will carry this pressure to the brake caliper housed in each wheel. Here, the pressure will be used to squeeze the brake pads against the brake rotors, creating the friction needed to slow and stop the vehicle.

So, while braking seems like a simple thing, the process involved is actually a bit more complex.

Do My Brakes Need Repair?

So, how will you know when your brakes need repair? Well, the good news is that your brakes, despite the advanced wear and tear that occurs, will not need repair all that often. Typically, the two parts that need the most frequent attention are the pads and rotors, needing repair around every 20,000 miles or so and every 50,000 miles or so respectively.

Of course, there are also signs and symptoms you can look out for that will indicate the need for brake repair. For example, if your brake pedal feels “soft” or “spongey” when you press it, or your INFINITI pulls to the left or right side when you press the brake, it often indicates the need for repair.

Some other symptoms to look out for, include:

• Burning smell while driving
• Brake light comes on
• Squeaking or grinding noises when applying the brakes
