The first, and most obvious, sign that indicates it’s time for an oil change is your car’s oil light coming on. Nowadays, most models are equipped with some sort of oil light.

Whether it triggers when it’s time for a change or it displays the oil life percentage in real time, paying attention to this dashboard light helps you stay on schedule, with your car’s routine oil changes.

Declining Vehicle Performance

There are some signs of declining vehicle performance you’ll want to look out for, too. Some of these are listed below.

Visible/more than usual vehicle exhaust

If you start to see smoke coming from your car’s exhaust pipes as you drive, it’s usually indicative of an oil issue.

Knocking sound coming from engine

As you drive, if you start to hear any unusual knocking noises, it could point to oil that needs to be changed.

Vibrations, when idling

If your car starts to shake, while it’s stopped at a red light, for example, it could mean the oil needs to be changed.

Manually Checking Your Vehicle’s Oil Life

If you suspect your vehicle’s oil needs to be changed, you can manually check its life. Opening up the hood, you’ll find the oil dipstick.

Removing the dipstick and taking a look at the oil that’s on it tells you how healthy the oil is. If the oil on the stick is dark and dirty, it means it’s time for a change.

Changing your car’s oil every 5,000 to 7,000 miles you drive is always a good rule of thumb to follow, as well.
